Your Moving House Checklist: How to Prepare to Move House Without the Stress
Planning to move into a new home is one of life’s most exciting milestones, but it can quickly become overwhelming without the right preparation. Whether you’re upsizing, downsizing, or finally making the big move you’ve been putting off, having a solid moving house checklist in place makes all the difference. Preparation is important, and the earlier you start, the smoother moving day will be.
At Eden Hawk Financial Solutions, we’re a team of experienced mortgage brokers based in Cardiff. We help clients across South Wales and the rest of the UK navigate the mortgage process so that when it’s time to move, you can focus on settling into your new home rather than drowning in paperwork. Buying a home is stressful enough without worrying about whether you have the right mortgage deal in place.
First Steps: Get Your Mortgage Sorted Early
The first steps toward moving home should begin well before you start packing. Getting your finances in order is the foundation on which everything else is built. As a mortgage broker, Eden Hawk works with the whole of market to find the most suitable deal for your circumstances, whether you’re a first-time buyer or a seasoned home mover.
Having the right mortgage in place early means your solicitor and conveyancer can move forward without delays, and you’ll have a clearer picture of your moving date. We work closely with solicitors and estate agents, so we can help keep the entire chain moving in the right direction. Once your mortgage is confirmed and your conveyancer has exchanged contracts, it’s time to start organising your move.
Eden Hawk tip: A mortgage broker can also advise on buildings insurance and contents insurance at this stage, making sure you have the right insurance in place before you move into your new property.
Your Moving Home Checklist: 6–8 Weeks Before Moving Day
The key to a smooth move is starting early. Use this checklist as your guide for the weeks leading up to the big day:
6–8 Weeks Before Moving
- Confirm your moving date and give notice on your existing home (if you rent)
- Research removal companies. Look for members of the British Association of Removers for added peace of mind
- Get at least three quotes from removal firms and check availability
- Consider whether hiring a van yourself might work out cheaper if you have a car and a couple of helpers
- Book time off work, if necessary. Avoid school holidays if possible to keep costs down
- Notify your bank, employer, HMRC, and other key contacts of your new address
- Set up mail redirection with Royal Mail so your post gets redirected to your new pad
- Confirm your buildings insurance and contents insurance are ready for the new property
Ready to Move: Packing and Your New Home
Once your removal firm is booked and your moving date is confirmed, it’s time to start packing. Don’t underestimate how much stuff you have — most people do. Start with the loft and non-essential items first, working your way toward the things you use every day. Labelling boxes clearly on the side of the box (not just the top) will save you a lot of time when you unpack. It’s one of those small details that really make a big difference.
Stock up on moving boxes, bubble wrap, and bin bags well in advance. If you’re moving far or have a lot of stuff, your removal company may offer a packing service. Before moving day, make sure you’ve had a proper sort-out and set aside items you no longer need. Donate unwanted items or arrange a collection. Kitting out your new home is much easier when you’re not surrounded by clutter.
Change of Address Checklist
A change of address checklist is easy to overlook when you’re deep in the logistics of a big move, but it’s essential. Update your address with your bank, GP, dentist, DVLA, HMRC, pension providers, and any subscription delivery services. Getting your post redirected via Royal Mail is a great safety net, but it doesn’t replace a proper change of address, so notify everyone you can think of. Your solicitor will handle some of this during the conveyancing process, but most of it falls to you.
Change of Address — Who to Notify
- HMRC and the DWP
- DVLA (driving licence and vehicle registration)
- Your bank and any lenders
- Your employer and pension provider
- GP, dentist, and optician
- Royal Mail: set up mail redirection
- Online shopping accounts (Amazon, eBay, etc.) for delivery accuracy
- TV Licence, council tax, and utilities
- Your insurance policy providers: home insurance, car insurance
Moving Day: The Removal and Your New Property
Before the removal team arrives on moving day, do a final walkthrough of your old house to make sure nothing has been left behind. Don’t forget to take meter readings at both your old and new property. Ideally, take a photo of the meters with a timestamp so you have a clear record for your energy suppliers. This avoids any billing disputes.
If you’re moving into your new home and it has a boiler and heating system you’re not familiar with, ask the sellers to leave written instructions or check these before they leave. You’ll also want to know where the stopcock and fuse box are, in case something goes wrong in the first few days.
Label your boxes and make sure your removal firm knows which room each box belongs to. Have a box set aside with the essentials, like your kettle, mugs, tea bags, toilet roll, a lightbulb or two, and phone chargers. You’ll thank yourself when the removal team have gone, and you’re standing in an empty room without any furniture assembled yet.
Arriving at Your New Home: The First Few Days
When you arrive at your new home, take a moment before you unpack to check that everything is in order. Walk around the property and note anything unexpected. Consider introducing yourself to a neighbour and letting them know you’ve moved in. It’s a small gesture that can go a long way.
Over the first few days, you’ll want to cancel any services tied to your old address, like direct debits for old utilities, any rent agreements if applicable, and any local subscriptions. It’s also worth checking your home insurance is active from day one, including both buildings insurance and contents insurance to cover your move.
Remember: if you forget to take meter readings on moving day, contact both your old and new suppliers as soon as possible with estimated readings. Getting this right saves money and avoids disputes later.
